Roundworms are contagious intestinal parasites that are shaped like earthworms but are smaller in size. They can easily be seen with the naked eye. Symptoms of roundworm infections include asthma, pain in the eyes, rashes, fever and intestinal cramping. Roundworm infections can be mistaken for peptic ulcers. If you experience abdominal pain often, you could possibly have roundworms.

Pinworms are white, threadlike worms about one-third inch long. They can cause severe anal itching, insomnia, and restlessness. The itching will be more severe at night, this is when the worms tens to migrate outside the anus to lay their eggs. Pinworms are more common in children and infect up to 20 % of them.

Threadworms can cause coughing or bronchitis, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and gas, preceded by tiny red abrasions that sometimes itch.

Tapeworms can be large or small. They can cause weight and appetite loss, abdominal pain, intestinal obstruction, vomiting, diarrhea, gas, and distress. Just one tapeworm can cause severe problems. Tapeworm eggs in the liver have been mistaken for and treated with chemotherapy as if it were cancer.

Whipworms are small, thin worms that live in the large intestine. They inject their digestive fluid into host tissue. The tissue liquefies, and the whipworms then ingest the tissue. The process can cause bloody diarrhea, anemia, nausea, and other serious health complications.

Ascarids cause a condition called ascariasis. Symptoms are bloating, stomach pain, vomiting, and difficulty breathing.

Flatworms (Flukes) cause lesions on the lungs and hemorrhages under the skin, typical in AIDS cases. Flukes can live within their human host for up to 20 years.

Amoebae cause arthritis-like pain, leukemia-like symptoms, frequent and often uncontrollable running of the bowels, pain, and dehydration. They can coat the inside lining of the small intestine and prevent absorption of nutrients, causing life threatening malnutrition.

Giardia can cause diarrhea, weakness, weight loss, cramping, bloating and fever.
