Treatment for depression and an anxiety attack usually go hand in hand. If you are depressed you may also suffer from panic disorder symptoms. I've had almost all of them and was admitted to the hospital for two days after an attack in the summer of 2004. I had tremors, shortness of breath, rapid heratbeat, crying, and a fear that I was dying. I was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. After being discharged I knew I had to take control of my own health if I wanted to get better.
According to Matthew Naythons, M.D. and the staff of Nethealth:
About 80 percent of depressed people suffer psychological symptoms: unrealistic apprehension, fears, worry, aggitation, irritability, or an anxiety attack.
Some 60 percent of people with depression experience related physical symptoms: headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue, and chronic pain.
About 65 percent of depression sufferers experience sleep disorders. About 20 percent feel agitated.
About 17 percent report generalized symptoms.
About 10 percent suffer panic attacks.
It can manifest itself in many ways, such as nervousness, excessive tension or a sense of fear that is unwarranted. It often results in sleeplessness, restlessness, and an inability to concentrate.
An anxiety attack affects women twice as often as men. ( sometimes I wish I was a man! ) An anxiety attack is a severe form of anxiety in which the heart races. Many times you will hyperventilate. You'll also have sweaty palms and extreme apprehension for no apparent reason. This is simply an adrenaline rush.
One of the best ways to prevent an anxiety attack is to breathe deeply: Inhale slowly through your nose while counting to four. Hold your breath for about four seconds; then exhale slowly over a four second period through your mouth. Continue this until the anxiety attack stops.
What can you do for relief? If you have the money you can try a very good program from the Midwest Center for Stress and Anxiety.( I tried it but ended up getting my money back) For the rest of us, though, we can purchase some natural products that will be very beneficial.
Before you buy a natural remedy, it is important that you do your homework as far as your knowledge of herbs and vitamins is concerned. It is also imperative that you consult your family physician in order to ensure that the alternative treatment is safe for you.
A number of herbs offer relief from the symptoms of anxiety. For instance, St. Johns Wort is one of the most popular anti-anxiety herbs on the market. After taking St. Johns Wort for as little as two weeks, you should notice a difference in your anxiety level.
Valerian Root is another alternative option you might try. It is especially helpful in combating insomnia because of its sedative quality.
In other words, it helps to lull the central nervous system to sleep. Research indicates that Valerian Root is effective in improving sleep 90 percent of the time. This is important, since much of anxiety is linked to sleep disorders.
Vitamins can also provide an effective treatment for anxiety. They can be quite important in enabling neurotransmitter synthesis and maintenance. For instance, B-complex can help produce neurochemicals, which in turn assists in the synthesis of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine.
Yet another aid to combating anxiety is Passion Flower. It helps to calm the central nervous system, leading to feelings of peace. Meanwhile, Ashwaghanda Root can make you feel stronger so that you are better able to handle the effects of anxiety.
But perhaps no herbal remedy is quite as effective as Kava Kava. This is considered to be one of the strongest anti-anxiety remedies in the world. A number of studies indicates that Kava Kava is highly effective in relieving the short-term symptoms of anxiety. It is also considered quite safe to ingest, making it one of the most popular herbs available on the market today.
Commonly used drugs for treatment include xanax ( my step-son was addicted to this drug and it was a long and painful process to get him off ) , Ativan, Valium to name a few. These drugs are very addictive and numb the human mind. But when the medicine wears off, you actually become more anxious.
I now use only natural remedies for my anxiety attack and have not had one since the summer of 2004 ( It is now 2006 )
I'm so glad I don't take prescription drugs anymore; too many side effects and too risky.
