GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Apricot seeds are also known as bitter almonds and are believed to expel mucus from the lungs as well as an agent to stop coughing.Chinese medicine practitioners often use the inner kernel of apricots to relieve bronchial ailments. They are also prescribed as a laxative.
TARGET AILMENTS:
Take internally for:
* coughing and wheezing
* bronchitis
* asthma
* emphysema
* constipation
PREPARATIONS:
The seeds or decoctions such as cough syrups are available at health food stores or at Chinese pharmacies and Asian markets.
SIDE EFFECTS:
Serious: Excessive doses can lead to dizziness, nausea, vomiting and headache.
This can progress to spasms, diluted pupils, erratic heartbeat, comma, and death.
SPECIAL INFORMATION:
Warning:
* These seeds should be taken very carefully, since it includes a poisonous
substance. In the human body, the components of the seed break down
into several products, one of which is prussic acid, which is highly toxic.
Activated charcoal and ipecac syrup are recommended antidotes to overdoses.
* Never give to children under the age of twelve and patients with diarrhea.
* There are a substantial number of claims on the internet concerning the cancer
fighting benefits, but the dosage that has to be taken for
treatment becomes toxic to the body.
POSSIBLE INTERACTIONS:
The seeds should not be taken in combination with astragalus, skullcap or
kudzu root.
