LATIN NAME:

Cedrus atlantica

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The atlas cedar is a majestic tree that grows 50 to 80 feet tall in the Atlas mountains in North America. It has dark, fissured bark, tiers of horizontal branches bearing dark green to blue needles and has dull green to brown upright cones.




The cedarwood is a broad, evergreen, pyramid-shaped tree with wide-spreading branches and has a warm, long-lasting, dry spicy-wood aroma. The atlas cedar trees are mostly grown for the production of essential oil, which is obtained through steam distillation.

TARGET AILMENTS: * helps to loosen and remove mucus during attacks of bronchitis, coughs, colds, influenza and other congestive conditions.

* soothes the over excitable.

* relieves mental strain.

* gently helps insomnia.

* massage in for easing arthritis and chronic rheumatism.

* very suitable for treating infected skin conditions on the face, body or scalp such as acne, eczema and psoriasis.

* oil can fortify and strengthen at times of stress or emotional pressure, and low self-esteem.

PREPARATION

Over the counter: Cedar wood oil is available as an essential oil in health food stores.

Parts used: The wood of the tree.

Collection: The cedarwood tree is pulped or shredded to gain access to the secretory canals of the tree, which hold its aromatic essence, prior to distillation.

Actions: Antiseptic, antibacterial, wound healing, decongestant

Combinations: Add frankincense, juniper berry or eucalyptus oil to cedar wood oil to help clear mucus from the respiratory tract.

Tea tree oil will enhance atlas cedar’s antiseptic and antibacterial properties.

To help support healing action add Lavender, geranium, or bergamot essential oil.

The atlas cedar, when blended with geranium, juniper berry, thyme or ylang Ylang essential oil, is helpful in maintaining a sense of mental and emotional equilibrium following a time of crisis.

SIDE EFFECTS:

None expected.

CAUTION:

Not to be used during pregnancy, should not be used by women who are breast feeding, and for babies or small children. Patch test first because it may irritate sensitive skin.
