Black Willow Bark





LATIN NAME:

Salix nigra

Black Willow bark is also known as Swamp Willow bark.



GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND INFORMATION:

The Black Willow tree is one of the most common willow species in North America and one of the most widely used species of willow trees among Native American groups. It can grow to a height of thirty to forty feet tall but can get to the height of 100 feet.

Black Willow bark contains a safe natural source of aspirin-like chemicals. Because of the chemical, herbalist continued to used Willow Bark for the treatment of fever, pain (especially pain in the lower back), headaches, and inflammatory conditions such as arthritis.

Black Willow Extract is shown to have potent anti-microbial properties to fight acne. The extract gives the benefit of B-hydroxy acid without the irritation.

TARGET AILMENTS:

Take internally for:

* rheumatism

* arthritis

* rheumatoid arthritis

* fevers

* headaches

* thinning the blood

* skin prone to acne

PREPARATIONS AND DOSAGE:

Over the counter: Black willow is available as dried bark, powdered herb, tincture, and standardized extract in tablets or liquid at health food stores. Follow the recommended dosage on the label.

At home:

Decoction: Pour 8 oz. of water onto 1 to 2 teaspoonfuls of the dried bark. Bring to a boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Drink this three times a day.

Parts used: Bark

Collection: The bark of the tree is collected in the spring when new growth starts.

Constituents: Salicin, tannin

Actions: Anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antiseptic, astringent, anti-pyretic

Combinations: can be combined with Black Cohosh, Celery Seed, Guaiacum and Bogbean in the treatment for rheumatoid arthritis.

SAFETY AND SIDE EFFECTS:

* As of yet, there is no known evidence of any side effects with willow bark.

* When taken in excess or over doses of willow bark are consumed, it may cause skin rash, nausea, vomiting and tinnitus.

* Anyone who is allergic or sensitive to aspirin should not use willow bark.

* People who are taking blood thinning medication should not take willow bark.
