The Blue Flag Herb

LATIN NAME:
Iris versicolor
The Blue Flag herb is also known as Dagger Flower, Dragon Flower, Flag Lily, Iris, Marsh Iris, Poison Flag, Snake Lily, Water Lily, and Wild Iris.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND INFORMATION:
Blue Flag is a hardy perennial with stems that are often branched out to three feet in length.
The flowers are typical of iris shape and are blue to purple with yellow and whitish marks at the base of the sepals.
It is found in swamps and low grounds of central and eastern North America.
TARGET AILMENTS:
Take internally for:
* stimulating the liver and intestinal glands
* constipation associated with liver problems
* eczema
* psoriasis
PREPARATIONS:
Blue Flag iris is available in powdered root, solid extract, fluid extract, and tincture at health food stores.
Can be prepared as a decoction.
Parts used: Rhizome
Collection: The rhizome is collected in the Fall.
Constituents: Oleoresin, salicylic acid, alkaloid, tannin, gum, volatile oil
Actions: Alterative, anti-inflammatory, diaphoretic, diuretic, laxative, sialagogue
cholagogue, hepatic, emetic, cathartic
Combinations: Blue Flag iris combines well with Yellow Dock, Echinacea or Burdock.
SAFETY AND SIDE EFFECTS:
* Should not be taken by pregnant women.
* Do not use if you’re pregnant or breast feeding.
* Avoid taking the herb internally.
* Can cause nausea and vomiting when taken in large doses.
* Severe irritation will occur if this herb comes in contact with the eyes,
nose and mouth.
