Bursitis is an inflammatory condition affects the bursae (tendons) around the knee and elbow joints. The water-filled cushions or sacs between the larger tendon and the bones become swollen and red and painful in the joint especially on movement.
It is also known as “housemaid knee” if it affects the knees and “tennis elbow” if it affects the elbow.
These names often indicate the occupation or the sport in which the joint has been overused. It can also in some cases be the result of an inflammatory joint disease.
When the condition is of short-term duration it is best to help the tissues by using a compress on the affected area or a stimulating liniment.
Both the compress and the liniment will reduce the inflammation and ease the pain. If the problem continues or is long-term then you will need internal treatment as if for rheumatism or arthritis.
Treatment
Rest the joint as soon as you notice that damage has become apparent. Eliminate as much as possible the action or cause of the condition. Elevate the joint (if possible, the knee) above the head as much as possible.
Massage gently three times a day with a natural liniment for Bursitis. Apply cold compacts three times a day.
