Essential oils are composed of tiny molecules which are easily dissolved in emulsifiers, alcohol and in particular fats. This helps essential oils to penetrate the skin easily and work into the body by mixing with the fatty tissue.
Moods can be changed or enhanced with the use of scents. As the essence of the oil evaporates and is inhaled through the million of sensitive cells that line the nasal passage, the essence sends messages straight to the brain and effect the emotions by working on the limbic system.
Aromatic oils can have significant physiological and physical effects on the body. They effect your mood as well as enhance your physical well-being as the same time.
Aromatic molecules may also enter your lungs and be absorbed into the blood stream which can carry them to all parts of the body. They may also be absorbed into the blood stream when used with massage oil and massaged into the skin.
Each oil has a distinct chemical composition which determines its volatility, color, fragrance and the way in which it affects the system, giving each oil its unique set of beneficial properties.
Essential Oils Advice:
Always do a patch test before using any oil to make sure you are not overly sensitive to it.
Dilute oils in a carrier oil before applying to you skin.
Essential oils will last for 1 to 2 years, they will last twice as long if kept chilled. Wrap them up well or they will absorb other smells. Blended oils will last for three months, so mix only what you need when you need it. There is one exception, when you make a mixture with wheat germ oil (a natural preservative), which lasts for up to a year.
Any oils that smells more strongly than when you bought it or is cloudy is stale and should not be used.
Essential oils are sensitive to light, so store them in dark glass bottles with stoppers, in a dark place.
Even though the bathroom is probably where you will use your oils the most, do not keep them in the bathroom because they will evaporate and become stale from the steam.
