Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Origins:
Eucalyptus essential oil comes from the Eucalyptus tree which is one of the tallest trees in the world. It originated in Australia and later grew in Tasmania, China, the US, Brazil and the Mediterranean. There are approximately 500 species of Eucalyptus trees and shrubs. The Aborigines may possibly have been the first to use it medically.
Description:
The Tasmanian Blue Gum has silvery, blue-green leaves which produce a pale yellow oil which has a cool camphorous smell. The fresh leaves give a rich yield of highly potent essence which is one of the most versatile in aromatherapy.
Therapeutic Effects:
The principal element of the oil is the antiseptic eucalyptol. The oil is particularly helpful for asthma, bronchitis, flu, sinusitis, skin infections, rheumatism and sore because of its anti-inflammatory properties. The oil can reduce fever, is a strong diuretic and is well-known for its head-clearing qualities.
Uses:
The Blue Gum oil is included in pharmaceuticals and veterinary medicines. The oil has a cooling effect on the body temperature. It is widely used in cold and cough medicines and rubs. It is used in the bath to relieve cystitis or on a handkerchief to clear the head.
Lemon and Peppermint Eucalyptus are cosmetic and industrial fragrances, which are used in room vaporizers and to treat wounds, asthma, colds, and fevers. Lemon is antifungal and is used against Athlete’s foot and Candida. Peppermint is used to treat muscular aches and pains.
Caution:
Eucalyptus essential oils are among the safest, when used externally, but internally they are toxic.
Growth and Propagation:
In temperate climates, it should be grown in a sheltered position in well-drained, moist soil with a thick mulch, or as a pot plant brought inside when frost starts. Prune Blue Gums annually or biennially to maintain an attractive foliage. It is easy to grow from seeds.
