LATIN NAME:

Hepar sulphuris calcareum

COMMON NAMES: Calcium sulfide, crude calcium sulfide, sulfured of lime

GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND INFORMATION:

Calcium sulfide is the main ingredient in hepar sulph. It is made by using the flaky inner layer of oyster shells which provides the calcium and flowers of sulfur.

This remedy was once used as an antidote for mercury poisoning, but is now used by homeopathic physicians to treat patients with conditions that tend to be infected, often producing pus. It is also given primarily for respiratory problems such as croup and coughs, and skin infections.

REMEDY PROFILE:

This remedy works best for people that are touchy, both mentally and physically. They are oversensitive, quick to take offense, often critical, irritable and hard to please. When they are ill, their irritability will increase and the pain and anger from being ill may cause them to have violent outburst. These people tend to have a low pain threshold and will complain that their pain is mush worst than it really is. They have an intolerance to pain and cold.

Hepar sulph. is generally used where there is an infection in the respiratory system and skin. It is especially helpful for ailments that are accompanied by swollen glands in the neck and groin area. They also may have a high fever alternating with chills.

TARGET AILMENTS:

* Colds - Accompanied with fever, sneezing, sweating, and the need for warmth.

* Catarrh - May be watery at first, then blood-stained, thick, and yellowish in color.

* Sore throat - A hoarse voice, sore throat, and swollen tonsils. May have splinter like pain, especially when swallowing, that may spread to the ears when yawning or swallowing.

* Coughs and croup - A dry, hacking cough that is accompanied with throat irritation. A loose cough that may cause a choking feeling or as if being tickled by a feather. Chest is weak with a lot of rattling and large amounts of phlegm. Cough is loose in the morning and dry in the evening. The cough with croup is more of a barking cough and it is difficult to cough of the phlegm.

* Headache - Pain boring into the right side, root of nose. Pain is worse with movement or stooping.

* Skin conditions - Skin that is rough and chaps easily, and flare ups such as acne that is inflamed and sore with yellow pus. Infections such as styes, boils, and cold sores that may be accompanied with yellow discharge and abscesses that bleed easily. Injuries to the skin that are slow to heal and produce foul-smelling pus.

* Earache - A sharp shooting pain may accompany an infection that has a discharge of foul-smelling pus from the ear.

PREPARATION:

Hepar sulfuris is available over the counter in both liquid and tablet form in various potencies.
