Have You Tried Herbal Supplements For ADHD?

One of the first things that a doctor will want to do for your child that has ADHD is put them on prescription medication. This is not to say that this is completely wrong or that there are not cases where prescription medication is not needed. The thing is though, there may be some other options available to you.

These options include various herbal supplements for ADHD treatment. Whether or not these will absolutely work for your child or not, it is certainly worth a shot because you put your child on prescription medication. Even if your child has already begun taking medication, you still might want to talk to his or her doctor to see if the herbal supplements can be used along with the medication.

A great supplement to try out might be that of Zinc. This is something that some scientists out there have noticed to give improvements when it was used in conjunction with ADHD medication. The impulsiveness and hyperactivity is said to be greatly reduced with the supplementation of zinc. Eating foods that are naturally high in zinc is ideal. Such foods would include red meat, beans, nuts, oysters and fortified cereals.

Omega-3 fatty acids are said to help improve many of the ADHD symptoms. You will be able to find the Omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil. Some of the best ways to get your Omega-3 fatty acids would be the eat more salmon, herring, albacore tuna, sardines and trout.

Other herbal supplements for ADHD to look into would include t melatonin. This is a natural hormone supplement that has been shown to give great benefits to children with ADHD and who take stimulant medications. While it may not help with the symptoms of ADHD alone, it will help get sleep problems under control. And since many ADHD children end up with sleep problems once they start taking the ADHD medication for their hyperactivity and impulsiveness, the melatonin helps curb the problem created.

Bringing more iron into the diet of the child with ADHD may help treat some of the symptoms, as this is something that a lot of studies have started to find. This is under the assumption that many children with ADHD have iron deficiencies.

As you can see, there are many things that you can try. If you can find that these herbal supplements for ADHD work for you, then keep up with it. Just make sure that no matter what you do, you are not taking your child off of any ADHD prescribed medication unless you are under the care of a doctor in doing so.
