Iceland moss is a lichen that has the appearance of moss and only grows to the height of 3 to 4 inches. Its color varies from a pale chestnut color to a grayish white. The body of the plant is erect, highly branched and branches are curled with spiny edges.
It is found on mountains of the northern countries. It grows in North America in the Artic regions, from Alaska to Newfoundland, and south in the Rocky Mountains to Colorado, and to the Appalachian Mountains.
It is high in carbohydrates and is eaten as a food. It is also dried and ground into flour to make bread and is often used in cough medication.
