GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND INFORMATION:

Red Raspberry plants are biennial, deciduous shrubs that grow as high as six feet. They have woody stems with thorns, green leaves, and white flowers that turn into edible red berries. The berries are commonly used for gourmet desserts, but herbalist value the leaves.



Red Raspberry plants have long been established as a female herb. The leaf tea is used by pregnant women to help prevent complications and make delivery easier. The tea can be drunk during the last trimester of pregnancy to decrease the risk of hemorrhage.

TARGET AILMENTS:

Take internally for:

* healthy nails, bones, teeth, skin

* reducing menstrual bleeding

* relaxing uterine and intestinal spasms

* strengthening the uterine wall in preparation for labor

Use as a gargle or mouth wash for:

PREPARATIONS:

Raspberry is available in health food stores as dried leaves, berries, tea, tincture, and capsules.

Red Raspberry can be used as a tea and infusion.

Parts used: Leaves, berries

Collection: Leaves should be picked before flowering, harvest fruit when ripe.

Constituents: Tannin, volatile oil, pectin, citric acid, malic acid

Actions: Astringent, stimulant, tonic, refrigerant, parturient, emmenagogue, febrifuge

Combinations: Raspberry can be combined with Burdock, Yellow Dock, Cleavers, and Blue Flag to treat skin problems.

Raspberry can be combined with Peppermint to treat morning sickness.

SAFETY AND SIDE EFFECTS:

* The use of Red Raspberry should be restricted to use only during the third trimester.

* Red raspberry may cause an upset stomach or diarrhea if you exceed the recommended dose or eat to many berries.
