Reflexology is an ancient natural science that can be described as a specialized form of massage of the feet and hands. This natural therapy is based on the belief that each part of the body is interconnected through the nerve system to specific points on the feet and hands. It is performed to detect and correct imbalances in the body that may becoming an illness.
It is believed that the ancient Egyptians were the ones who actually developed hand and foot reflexology, believing that specific pressure points correspond to parts of the body.
The ancient Greece and China healers also used this therapy for healing.
Reflexologist claim that manipulation of the feet for healing purposes was used by the native people of North and South America.
Today reflexology is also known as zone therapy and reflex zone therapy. We all know from our doctors and recent health reports that 80% of all illnesses involve stress. And we also know that the first step to healing is relaxation. This therapy's goal is to clear the pathways of energy flow throughout the body, increase immune response, and return balance to the body.
The science of Reflexology believes that all body parts have energy and share information to other parts of the body. Pressure applied to a particular Meridian point brings about better function of all parts of that Meridian zone. As an alternative therapy,it can also be used for a measure of self-diagnosis and treatment.
Reflexologist look at the feet as a mini-map of the body; the big toes as the head, the balls of the feet as the shoulders, and the narrowing part of the foot as the waist area.
They use an inchworm-like massage motion of the thumb to produce a light or deep pressure on each zone, concentrating on the tenders spots of the foot. These spots often feel like little grains of salt under the skin.
Reflexology can treat:
*Digestive problems
*Menstrual irregularities
*Fatigue
*Aches and pains
*Stress and stress-related disorders
*Pregnancy problems
*Inflammatory skin conditions
The Effects of Reflexology:
The person being treated will experience a variety of sensations in different areas of the foot being massaged. If there is any feeling of pain or discomfort in the area being massaged - it may be congested - it is usually brief and soon goes away leaving a feeling of release that can be often felt all at once.
Immediately after a session, most people report a feeling of lightness and relaxation with renewed energy. This wonderful feeling may be occasionally followed as what is know as - cleansing reactions - such as headaches, runny nose, mild rash on skin and a strong urge to urinate.
Self-Help:
Reflexology is extremely difficult to do on one’s own feet, but you and your partner can do the massage on each other’s feet.
