Herbal Remedies for the Common Cold:

Astragalus - helps to promote the multiplication of white blood cells that are vital for fighting infection and keeps nasal passage linings from letting in rhinoviruses.



( If you feel a cold coming on, take 500 mg three or four times a day. At the start of the cold season take two capsule of a standardized extract of astragalus two times a day to boost your immune system.)

Cat's claw - speeds up the rate at which the immune system gets rid of the virus.

Echinacea - speeds up recovery and reduces the risk of catching a cold. (At the first sign of cold symptoms, take one teaspoon of tincture four times a day.

If you are around someone with a cold take it for a few days to help prevent you from catching it.)

Elderberry - is effective for upper respiratory infections and headaches associated with a cold. Also promotes sweating and can help break a fever.

Ginger - stops head and chest congestion and chills.

White Horehound - use lozenges to break up nasal congestion.

Osha - is helpful if an ear infection is also present.

Slippery elm - helps to relieve a scratchy throat.

Tea tree oil - help to relieve a sore throat, can be used as a gargle.

Aromatherapy Remedies for the Common Cold:

There are two methods of aromatherapy that are very helpful in combating colds:

1) Steam inhalations - can be used with or without a vaporizer.

Eucalyptus - opens up the sinus passages. Rosemary and Sage oils can be added along with the eucalyptus oil to aid in breaking up decongestion.

Chamomile - relieves headache.

Tea tree oil - helps in combating the infection.

Wintergreen Essential oil - helps to relieve nasal congestion.

2) Baths - use herbs in you bath the next time you have a cold and turn it into a healing bath. Enjoy a 10 minute bath and breathe deeply.

Peppermint Essential Oil - helps to clear mucus from nose and sinuses and relieves headaches.

Elderflower - helps to ease congestion from head, ears and chest.

Sage - helps to relieve muscular aches and pains and also eases congestion.

Eucalyptus, Lemon Balm, and Tea Tree - stimulating oils used in a bath early in the day will get you going.
