The clown at a birthday party, a Broadway show, a stadium rock concert, or even your friends fighting over the last potato chip–all of these are examples of entertaiment. Entertaining comes from the Old French word entretenir, to hold together or support. Historically, entertainment was associated with hospitality, and as it evolved into an amusement or distraction, it came to be defined by the performance involved–theatrical entertainment being shows, visual as stuff you like to look at, and audio being mostly music.
